ACM-Women in Tech Social Mixer Recap: Unveiling the Night of Bytes and Bonds!

On Nov.30, 2023, the ACM Student Chapter’s first social mixer was a big hit, seamlessly blending academic insights with some fun and camaraderie for computer science fans. It started with an ACM and ACM-W Chapter overview and a sneak peek at upcoming events, setting the stage for an evening of knowledge-sharing and good times.

Our professors Lihua Xu, Margaret Minsky, Sven Simikin took the chance to talk about their courses and share bits from their own academic journeys. The icebreaker involved each participant introducing themselves, fostering an inclusive atmosphere and laying the groundwork for authentic connections.

The event progressed to engaging activities, with attendees divided into three groups. Taboo tested participants’ communication and teamwork skills as they guessed computer science-related words. Spot it & UNO introduced cards for a playful touch, while the Draw & Guess activity prompted creativity and intuition as participants illustrated words for their peers to decipher.

Injecting an academic flair, the final puzzle required a post-order traversal of a tree. Decoding the puzzle demanded a touch of base64 magic, revealing the hidden word: “woman.” This clever integration of data structures, encryption, and a woman in tech theme instilled a shared sense of accomplishment and triggered a few “aha” moments.

As the event wrapped up, it became evident that first and second-year students had discovered a new favorite within the ACM repertoire. Beyond the entertaining activities, this social mixer evolved into a focal point for discussions on courses, career paths, winter plans, and all facets of computer science. The atmosphere wasn’t merely about the present; it laid the foundation for a network, a learning space, and a community pulsating with excitement in the ever-evolving world of computer science.

The resounding success of this event serves as a testament to ACM’s unwavering dedication to constructing a vibrant community for every tech enthusiast. Stay tuned for the next thrilling adventure!
